“Mark of The Beast” by Jonathan Holmes

Heat rash on the back of my neck.
Nylon on the kneecap of cop who wants respect
as bad as I want to
breathe.
Hot breath ricochets
like broken boomerangs.
Bends around my face
as I pray
to pavement.
To asphalt.
To ancestors.
Blacktop hot like
Lucifer.
In heat like
bitch
fucking everything in sight.
My skin is singed.
My blood boils.
My heart beats
and
bleeds
and
beats
until it
bursts.
